Amazon is preparing to relaunch a smartphone, over a decade after its first attempt with the Fire Phone failed to gain traction. The new device, internally codenamed “Transformer,” is under development by the company’s Devices and Services division and will heavily integrate Amazon’s Alexa AI assistant and its ecosystem of apps.

Return to Hardware: A Strategic Shift?

This move signals a renewed interest in hardware, especially as Amazon aggressively expands its presence in artificial intelligence. The “Transformer” smartphone is designed to seamlessly work with Amazon Shopping, Prime Video, Prime Music, and other Amazon services. The key difference this time is the deep integration of AI, with the device expected to encourage wider adoption of Amazon’s AI products.

The new smartphone will not only offer smart home integration via Alexa but will also feature advanced AI capabilities. The recently revamped Alexa+, which now includes generative AI features, will be central to the device’s functionality. Users can expect features like trip planning, calendar management, recipe saving, entertainment recommendations, and homework assistance.
