OpenAI has rolled out group chat functionality to ChatGPT, allowing users to collaborate with the AI and share the experience with up to 20 people. This means you can now bring ChatGPT into your discussions, debates, or projects – and let the AI do the heavy lifting for you.
How It Works
The feature is accessible through a new icon in the top right corner of existing or new chats. Users can generate an invite link to share with others, and participants need to create a basic profile before joining. Group chats are stored separately in the sidebar for easy access.
OpenAI is releasing the feature globally over the next few days, so if you don’t see it yet, it should arrive shortly.
Why This Matters
This update transforms ChatGPT from a personal assistant into a potential social tool. The ability to include an AI in group conversations raises interesting questions: Will people start relying on ChatGPT to settle arguments? Will it become a crutch for decision-making?
For now, the feature is free for all ChatGPT users, even those on the free tier, as long as they’re logged in.
Disclosure
It’s worth noting that Mashable’s parent company, Ziff Davis, is currently involved in a copyright lawsuit against OpenAI, alleging infringement in AI training processes. However, this doesn’t appear to affect the availability of the group chat feature.
In short, ChatGPT is evolving beyond individual use, and this latest update could change how people interact with AI and each other.
