Microsoft is expanding its artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities within Windows 11 with the introduction of a voice-activated assistant, accessible through the command “Hey Copilot.” This move positions Microsoft alongside tech giants like Apple, Amazon, and Google in the increasingly competitive space of always-on AI assistants. The feature, rolling out initially to Windows Insider program members, marks a significant step toward more deeply integrating agentic AI into everyday computing.
What is ‘Hey Copilot’ and How Does It Work?
The new voice feature allows users to interact with Microsoft’s Copilot AI using natural language commands, much like existing voice assistants. To activate, users simply say “Hey Copilot,” triggering a visible microphone icon and an audio cue indicating Copilot is listening. The system can answer questions, perform tasks, and provide guidance on screen content. Conversations end with the command “Goodbye” or by simply remaining silent for a period.
The feature is not enabled by default, requiring users to manually activate it within the Copilot app settings. This gives users control over their privacy and AI interaction preferences.
The Rise of Agentic AI
Microsoft is betting heavily on what it calls “agentic AI,” a next-generation approach that goes beyond simple generative AI. Unlike earlier AI models focused on content creation, agentic AI is designed for independent action and decision-making. Microsoft views this as the future of AI technology, and “Hey Copilot” is a key part of that vision.
This is a critical shift because current AI tools often require precise prompts. Agentic AI aims to handle ambiguity better, anticipating user needs and executing tasks with minimal direction.

Copilot can now directly manipulate Windows settings and integrate with Office apps such as PowerPoint and Word, enhancing productivity. Microsoft has also recently introduced a Premium version of Microsoft 365, priced at $20 per month, that unlocks additional AI-powered features.

Microsoft is previewing future features, including a redesigned Windows taskbar driven by Copilot, and Copilot Actions. These actions will allow users to perform web-based tasks directly through voice commands, such as booking restaurant reservations or ordering groceries.
