Motorola Enters Book-Style Foldable Market with Razr Fold

21

Motorola is expanding its foldable phone lineup with the Razr Fold, a direct competitor to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold series and Google’s Pixel Fold. Unveiled at CES, the Razr Fold takes on the “book-style” foldable form factor, positioning itself as a versatile device for multitasking and immersive media consumption.

Key Specifications and Design

The Razr Fold features a 6.6-inch external display, designed to function like a standard smartphone when closed, and an 8.1-inch internal display – slightly larger than current leading competitors. Motorola emphasizes the device’s sleek profile, though specific dimensions remain undisclosed. The phone will come in two finishes: Pantone blackened blue with woven vegan leather, and Pantone lily white with a silk-textured vegan leather.

Performance and Features

Motorola is integrating AI features into the Razr Fold, including “Catch Me Up” for notification summaries and “Next Move” for context-aware action recommendations – features already present in the updated 2025 Razr and Razr Ultra models. The phone will also support the Moto Pen Ultra stylus, enhancing productivity and creative workflows.

The Razr Fold’s camera system includes a triple 50-megapixel setup with Dolby Vision recording and video stabilization. This suggests Motorola is aiming for high-quality image and video capture, matching the capabilities of rival foldables.

Market Positioning and Competition

The Razr Fold enters a rapidly evolving foldable market. The trend toward thinner devices is accelerating, with competitors like Samsung and Honor pushing the boundaries of form factor design. Google’s Pixel Fold has also set a new benchmark by introducing IP68 water and dust resistance, a feature previously uncommon in foldables. Motorola’s device will need to compete on both design and durability.

The device’s larger displays – both internal and external – could be a key differentiator, particularly for users who frequently multitask or consume media on the go. Motorola highlights the potential for running up to three apps simultaneously, exceeding the capabilities of some competitors.

Pricing and Availability

Motorola has not yet announced the Razr Fold’s price. Given the premium positioning of comparable devices (Pixel Fold starting at $1,799, Galaxy Z Fold at $2,000), the Razr Fold is expected to fall into the high-end price bracket. The phone is scheduled for release in North America this summer.

The success of the Razr Fold will depend on its ability to offer a compelling combination of design, performance, and software features that justify its likely high price tag.

The foldable market remains relatively niche, but Motorola’s entry signals growing confidence in the long-term viability of this form factor. The impending launch of a foldable iPhone in the near future is likely to further accelerate the competition and drive innovation in the space.
