Rivian is preparing to launch a dedicated Apple Watch app that will grant drivers expanded remote control over their electric vehicles, according to a new report from RivianTrackr. The app will allow users to lock/unlock doors, adjust windows, and activate the alarm directly from their wrist, enhancing convenience and vehicle management.
Expanding Digital Key Access
This move follows a December software update that turned the Apple Watch into a digital key for newer Rivian models (R1S and R1T, 2025 editions). Currently, the Apple Watch functions as a key via Apple Wallet, but lacks the broader remote controls available on the iPhone app. A standalone Rivian app would bridge this gap, providing feature parity across devices.
Gen 1 Vehicle Support
The upcoming software update will also extend digital key functionality to Rivian’s earlier models (2021-2024), ensuring wider compatibility across the vehicle lineup. This is notable because current digital key access is limited to 2025 vehicles.
Software Update Timeline
The standalone Apple Watch app is expected to arrive as part of Rivian’s 2026.03 software update, bundled with the iPhone app’s version 3.9 release. This indicates a coordinated rollout designed to streamline the user experience across all supported devices.
Apple Ecosystem Limitations
Despite these advancements, Rivian – like Tesla – still lacks support for Apple CarPlay. Both companies have yet to integrate this widely used in-car infotainment system. Tesla is reportedly working on CarPlay compatibility, but no timeline has been confirmed. The broader question remains whether Rivian will prioritize deeper integration with other Apple features in the future.
Rivian’s expansion of Apple Watch functionality demonstrates a strategic effort to enhance convenience and digital access for its customers. The move suggests a long-term vision for a fully integrated vehicle ecosystem, though key gaps in Apple support remain.
