Rivian Expands Apple Watch Integration with New Remote Control Features

23

Rivian is preparing to launch a dedicated Apple Watch app that will allow drivers to control key vehicle functions remotely, according to a recent report by RivianTrackr. The app will enable users to lock and unlock doors, adjust windows, and activate the alarm directly from their wrist. This move builds on previous integration efforts that already allow the Apple Watch to function as a digital key for newer Rivian models.

Expanding Access to Older Vehicles

Currently, the Apple Watch digital key feature is limited to 2025 Rivian vehicles, leveraging Apple’s digital wallet integration. However, the upcoming software update—scheduled for release as part of Rivian’s 2026.03 update alongside iPhone app version 3.9—is expected to extend compatibility to older Rivian models manufactured between 2021 and 2024. This expansion of functionality ensures wider accessibility for existing Rivian owners.

Bridging Feature Gaps

The standalone Apple Watch app addresses a previous limitation: while the Apple Watch could serve as a key, it lacked the remote control capabilities found in the iPhone app. This new app will bring feature parity across devices, offering a more comprehensive user experience.

The Bigger Picture: Ecosystem Integration

Rivian’s continued investment in Apple integration stands in contrast to the ongoing lack of support for Apple CarPlay in both Rivian and Tesla vehicles. While Tesla is reportedly working on CarPlay integration, neither company currently offers full ecosystem compatibility. The push for deeper Apple Watch functionality suggests Rivian is prioritizing direct integration over broader automotive platform standards.

Rivian’s decision to expand Apple Watch capabilities indicates a focus on convenience and enhanced user control for its drivers, while also raising questions about future support for other Apple devices and features. The company’s next moves will likely determine whether it fully embraces the Apple ecosystem or continues to pursue a more independent approach to vehicle integration.
