Why “3” was filmed in Cape Town instead of Hollywood

Peter Creel and Bob Andrews have done it. They have just finished their last case. It’s time to rest and take a vacation. First Detective Justus Jonas agrees. You don’t disagree with this logic.

But this is no ordinary holiday. Peter’s father invited them to South Africa. Specifically, the haunted island owned by Miss Wilbur. he is rich He is building a theme park. Something is wrong. A monster named Tokolosh is terrorizing the workers. Panic spreads. The fear is great. Naturally, this became a case of “The Three Investigators”. They set off on an adventure like never before.

Real location behind the Rocky Beach

Rocky Beach is supposed to be a suburb in Southern California. In this book, this is the home of the boys. But in the new film adaptation, the geography changes dramatically. The production team chose Cape Town. It is the southernmost city on the African continent. The entire filming took place in and around the metropolis near Cape of Good Hope.

Why Cape Town? It’s more than just an exotic backdrop.

The city has an excellent film infrastructure, says producer Malte Grunert, who heads the competence center of Studio Hamburg International Production (SHIP). This is the deciding factor. But there are also story reasons. The original novel has been adapted into a modern style. The screenwriter decided to move the plot to South Africa.

You have to make a real connection. This book series has a Rocky Beach theme throughout. This movie needed a real world equivalent. Cape Town has a suburban theme that reflects its American feel. This helps establish the story geographically and narratively. They decided to leave the film at that entirely. They are not just here to visit. they stayed.

Leaving America Behind

Director Florian Baxmeyer is equally excited about the transfer. He doesn’t want to hide what South Africa has to offer. This country is visually rich. It’s worth a look.

There are also practical reasons for abandoning the American environment. Modeling California would be a difficult task. One of the obstacles is driving on the left. In South Africa, you drive on the left. In America you drive on the right. In order to look American when filming in South Africa, the crew had to make a huge logistical effort to get the cars to go the wrong way. They had to hide so much.

They could not show the iconic Table Mountain. They could not show the beautiful coastline. These shots blown their cover. Baxmeyer said moving the story to South Africa was a big step forward. The purpose of this movement is to accept the position and not to fight against it.

The result is a story that feels bigger than the pages of the paperback. Tokolosh is real. The danger is real. In the background is one of the most impressive landscapes on earth. Boys don’t just solving a mystery. They explore the newly discovered world.
