You have a box of cables, a dead monitor, and maybe a laptop from 2014 sitting in your closet. It doesn’t work, or it’s too slow to care about. The easiest move is to bin it. But that is the wrong move.

Tossing old tech into the trash is bad for two distinct reasons. First, you are burying valuable materials. Old devices contain plastic, glass, and metals like copper and gold. These can be pulled out and used to build new devices. Making stuff from recycled materials usually takes less energy than mining virgin resources. Second, old tech is toxic. Circuit boards and monitors hold lead, mercury, and other chemicals. When those items sit in a landfill, those substances can leach into the soil and groundwater. In many U.S. states and other countries, these specific electronic components are classified as hazardous waste.

So, don’t put it in the dumpster. You have two paths: reuse or recycle.

How to reuse working electronics for a good cause

If the device still works, reuse is the greenest option. Refurbishing extends the life of the hardware. It saves the energy required to manufacture a new unit. It keeps non-recyclable parts out of the ground.

  • Cell phones: Take your old phone to the carrier store. They often take it for free or for a small discount on a new device. If you want to pick the charity, search for local organizations. Women’s shelters often accept working phones so survivors of domestic abuse can call 9-1-1 from anywhere.
  • Computers: School districts are hungry for working hardware. A fairly modern computer from the last decade can still serve a classroom.
  • Broken parts: If the scanner is dead but the webcam works, list the items on Freecycle or Craigslist. Someone is always looking for parts.

Why recycling old electronics is better than landfills

If the device is broken, too old, or you just don’t want to deal with the hassle of finding a person to pick it up, recycling is the answer.

Many modern computers are designed to be “demanufactured.” That means they can be taken apart easily into component parts. While recycling does consume energy, it is still significantly better for the environment than landfill disposal.

Finding a recycler can be tricky. The industry is not centralized. You might need to do a little digging.

  1. Check the manufacturer’s website. Many brands have take-back programs.
  2. Ask the store where you bought the item. Retailers often have collection bins.
  3. Use state or national databases to find local drop-off points.

In the United States, you can look at:
– The EPA’s “Where Can I Donate or Recycle My Old Computer” page.
– The National Reuse and Recycle Opportunities list from the Electronics Industry Alliance (EIA).
– State-specific policies from the NRC.

International options exist too, such as the International Association of Electronics Recyclers.

How much does electronics recycling cost?

Some programs are free. Others charge a fee. Expect to pay between $10 and $20 for drop-off recycling if you use a private service. If you cannot find a free program and do not want to pay, your local thrift store is a decent last resort. Just be honest about what works and what doesn’t when you drop it off.
