History loves a tidy narrative. It wants us to believe that Vladimir Zworykin, the RCA-backed engineer, single-handedly birthed television. It’s a comfortable lie. The truth is messier, sharper, and far more American. Enter Philo T. Farnsworth.
Born in Beaver, Utah, in 1906, Farnsworth wasn’t a corporate lab rat. He was a farm kid. While plowing fields, he noticed the rows of soil resembled lines of pixels. That visual stuck. By 1927, at just 21 years old, he transmitted the first image using purely electronic means. No mechanical disks. No spinning wheels. Just electrons.
What was the Image Dissector and why did it matter?
Most people don’t know the name Image Dissector. You should. It was Farnsworth’s big gun. An electronic camera tube that actually worked. By 1930, he had refined it enough to show off to the competition.
He demoed it for Vladimir Zworykin from the Radio Corporation of America (RCA). Farnsworth thought it was a peer-to-peer exchange. He was wrong. RCA saw a patent they could steal, or at least bury.
This sparked a legal war that defined the 1930s. Farnsworth sued RCA. RCA counter-sued. Both sides claimed they invented electronic television. The courts got involved. The tech world held its breath.
Did Farnsworth win the patent war against RCA?
Sort of. In 1939, RCA agreed to pay Farnsworth royalties. They signed a patent-licensing agreement. It was a partial victory. But look at the timing.
That same year, 1939, RCA launched the first commercially successful television system. They had the money. They had the distribution. They had the PR machine. Farnsworth had the patent credit, but he lacked the capital to scale.
He proved the concept. They sold the product.
Farnsworth went on to patent other inventions. Many of them brilliant. But he never made a fortune. He never got the primary credit for inventing television in the public imagination. Zworykin did. RCA did.
It’s a classic case of who builds vs. who sells. Farnsworth built the engine. RCA built the car. And history tends to remember the dealership.
Why do we remember the winner of the business battle more than the guy who actually made the physics work? Maybe we should rethink how we credit innovation. Or maybe we just like a better story.
